Much Ado About Nothing - DVD Review

Joss Whedon: the man behind my fave show ever, Buffy the Vampire Slayer. In 2012 he made a movie for love. And it got picked up by the media, went to many film festivals so I finally got to see it during Amsterdam Film Week in 2013. Let me tell you: It was well worth the wait. As I was going to meet several actors during HalloWhedon 5 I really wanted a dvd as well, so I could get it signed. However, as this drama/comedy of 109 minutes, wouldn't reach me before the convenion, my dear friend, Captain Rhys, who lives in England, ordered it for me and gave it to me during the con. And what better way is there to show how much I love this dvd of Much Ado About Nothing, than to write a review?

My review
Joss Whedon, creator of shows like
Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Firefly, Dollhouse and recently Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, is probably most famous for the action feature The Avengers with Robert Downey Jr and many others. When he had some time off after filming the previously named movie, he was supposed to go to Italy with his wife Kai. However... Joss can't sit still. Because in those two weeks off, he decided to film his dream project: Much Ado About Nothing.

Alexis-Denisof-and-Amy-Acker-in-Much-ado-About-Nothing_gallery_primary
Much Ado About Nothing is modern version of Shakespeare’s play with the same title. The story remains mostly unadapted, except for the opening which includes a 'one-night-stand’ with Beatrice (Amy Acker) and Benedick (Alexis Denisof). Some time later they meet again in her uncle's house, Leonato (Clark Gregg); Now Benedick is fiercly against marriage and Beatrice against men. But Leonato has more guests. His own daughter, Hero (Jillian Morgese), falls in love with Claudio (Fran Kranz), friend of Benedick and Don Pedro (Reed Diamond) – to whom Hero is engaged/betrothed. The most dangerous guest, however, is Don John (Sean Maher), brother of Don Pedro, who wants nothing more than destroy the happiness of others.

The Bard
You don't mess with classics. That's a message Whedon clearly understood. Even though the ‘one night stand’ is a small adaptation, the dialogue remains mainly unchanged. While Shakespearean English may be hard to understand, especially for those who didn't get English literature in high school, the story is understandable. The fact that ‘Old English’ is the spoken language in this movie, it doesn't have to be something to hold you back. de gesproken taal is, hoeft absoluut geen drempel te zijn. The quick dialogue is so energetic that you're simply taken by the actors emotions and actions. Other than that the story in itself is a classic filled with comedy, drama and exciting.

An extraordinary filmlocation
For the entirety of the movie they only used one location. You kinda have to when you shoot the entire thing in just twelve days. Joss used his own house for this, which can been seen as a character itself in teh story. It's a beautiful mansion, full of stairs, a large kitchen, and many rooms big enough to host a party. Not to mention the beautiful view from the garden. More than a (castle of a) house isn't necessary for the story. The many plotlines all have a the space to develop, from the many secret get togethers and conconting plans in back rooms, up to the staircases and windows from where the characters can eavesdrop. It creates a dynamic play between the many actors and storylines. A big bonus to the Whedonians themselves (fans of the works of Joss) is that they get to see the house where the 'genius' himself lives and where many of his works came into existence.

The Whedon family
For Whedonians such as myself, this movie is one big party. Whedon has drum op his actors and crew from most of the tv shows and movies where he worked on. Which means: Lots of familiar faces, with whom he - while his tv shows were still on air - used to have Shakespeare readings at his home. And then to think that most of them only had little to no experience in Shakespearean theatre. That they know how to convey the story to the audience - even when Shakespearian can't have been an easy language to speak - is admirable. Everyone knows just what their characters needs: From the puppy dog eyes between Fran Kranz and Jillian Morgese, to the cold stare from Sean Maher, the funny dynamic between Tom Lenk and Nathan Fillion to the sneaky planning of Clark Gregg and Reed Diamond. There's no moment where their performance falters. The most enchanting performance however is from Amy Acker and Alexis Denisof. They can open their box of skills and completely let themselves go: From slapstick comedy to drama. These two know how to bring this love story in an entirely new way and let you enjoy the whims which go hand in hand with being smitten.
(FYI: A couple of other known faces are Romy Rosemont, Riki Lindhome, Ashley Johnson)

With tears in your eyes
Comedies are always tricky. Especially when you use an old language that few people will understand/be able to follow. Whedon understood that Shakespeare's work never fades. The jokes are just as funny, but even more important is how you bring them. And this is where Whedon's Much Ado excells. You'll have tears in your eyes from laughing because this Much Ado About Nothing is funnier than you've ever seen before. If you've seen the Kenneth Brannagh version, you'll probably compare the two. But these movies are beyond comparison. Whedon and his actors bring humor to a new level by using the location and the talents of the actors to the max. Whether it's Denisof' singing or Acker's and Denisof's clumpsiness in the garden and kitchen. Nothing is funnier then when these two are trying to eavesdrop on conversations about each other while sneaking through the house.

Back to black (and white)
It may seem as a contradiction to film this movie in black and white when you want to tell a classic story in a modern way. It's a risky choice of style, but in this case it absolutely works. Because it high lights the timelessness ofthe story and accentuates both the location as the acting. The white fades in between the scenes falls in line with this style perfectly as it makes for a sublte transition, without abruptly jumping from scene to scene. It all fits perfectly together which is a joy to see.

Alright, I admit it: I'm partially biased. Joss Whedon is a genius and hero in my book and can't really make mistakes. But aside from that Much Ado About Nothing is one of the best movies I've seen in the past years. It has all the right ingredients: A great cast, a fantastic script that can make you laugh, cry, scared, but mostly takes you up in it's story. That Whedon chose this style, and the location as well as using the original Shakespearean dialogue, enhances all the aspects that made the play a succes. The modern twist (contemporary clothing, home, cell phones and setting) provides a fresh look on the story and shows that love stories like these remain timeless. It doens't really happen that right after watching a movie I want to see it again, but after seeing Much Ado I knew right away that I could watch this movie at least ten times more. Much Ado About Nothing is without question the must-see of the year!

Extra's
What is a dvd without extra's? There aren't too many extra's on this dvd, but it does include a commentary by Joss Whedon himself.
In his eyes his Much Ado About Nothing is simply the latest version and not THE version. There have been many versions before and he knows there will be after. Without giving too much away, there are several subjects that he talks about. You get to learn about a lot of fun facts of the movie, such as it being a home party for Joss Whedon and like the fact that the children's room was actually pink. Therefore a black and white filter wasn't really all that strange. Whedonians will also love some of the comments, like how Fillion plays a little Captain Hammer in his role. He also explains his choices in the movie itself. For instance about how he didn't understand everything Shakespeare wrote and to make sense of it, it sometimes contains changes to the script.
Other than that my edition also contained some Limited Edition Art Cards which are a nice little something extra. As for the dvd details: the menu is very dynamic with moving pictures and the dvd contains the commentary as well as a trailer of the movie. You could also choose to use the audio description, which pretty much tells everything that's happening on screen. And if you'd like to just watch a particlar scene, you can do so easily with the scene selection.

If you're still not sure if you'd like to watch this movie, than I end my review the trailer, to have you decide for yourself ;-)

Christmas movies - Whedonverse

As I am a major Joss Whedon fan, of course I love it when my favorite actors pop up in movies during the Holidays. Lucky for me, they apparently love it too. Because I found a whole lot of them! I haven't seen all of them, but here they are:

Help for the Holidays (2012) with Summer Glau
The little boy Will wishes Christmas spirit back into his family. His mother, Sara, is a busy woman with a Christmas shop, but no seasonal spirit and his dad Scott has lost that feeling too. Older sister Ally sees no point in it either. So Santa sends Christine, one of his elfs who wonders if there could be more to life than making toys in the North Pole, to the family as a nanny for the children. She must go to the real world and help them get the Christmas spirit back.

Why watch it? Summer Glau is enchanting as an elf. We are all thinking it right? She is the perfect elf! In a lot of kids movies, the children are basically annoying, but this isn't the case here. Of course love is involved and a little bit of family drama about neglecting the children, but this movie is full of magic and the story is actually a lot of fun. Sidenote: Don't you just love Hallmark? You can watch it in full:

A Golden Christmas (2009) with Nicholas Brendon
Another Hallmark movie is A Golden Christmas. Andrea Roth plays Jessica, a federal lawyer and single mother, who returns to her parents for the Holidays. Once here, she finds out that her parents are selling their beloved family home to new guy Michael (Nicholas Brendon!). She does not agree and will do everthing in her power to stop it from happening. As it turns out, they both know each other from way back when they were children... But they can't seem to remember it.

Why watch it? Well, it's Nicky. Nuff said! Just in case you want some more: Andrea may come off a little fake, but Nicholas is great in this adult single father role. The story is predictable, yes, but it's also sweet. Maybe sweet enough to give you a toothache but that depends on what kind of Christmas movies you like. It's funny, but also simple. Oh, and there's a really cute dog too!

Dear Santa (2011) with Amy Acker
Rich and spoiled 24-year old Crystal (Amy Acker) is being cut off by her parents: She has to find a job or a man. So faith lends a helping hand. A letter to Santa comes across her path and she reads it. In this letter Olivia asks Santa to send her father (David Hadyn-Jones) a new wife for Christmas. Crystal sees this as a sign and starts to look him up. Once in his life, it turns out that father Derek had the same idea... with ex- but now once again -girlfriend Jilian (Gina Golden).

Why watch it? Amy Acker is a bit to convincing in her role as spoiled rich kid/woman, but it's part of the role and luckily that doesn't last very long. It only takes about a couple of minutes to get into the movie and it's very enjoyable. Sure, it's a romantic comedy, so it's very predictable, but this movie is filled with nice characters and the story isn't half bad either. Amy Acker is sweet and David Hadyn-Jones is one of those people every girls falls for because he has an amazing heart. This movie also pays attention to homeless people, which gives it an extra layer. It reminds the audience that not everybody is always lucky enough to spend it in a warm house with their family.

Call Me Mrs. Miracle with Jewel Staite
Just like Mrs. Miracle, this movie is a romantic comedy with children, a love story and personal lives. This movie takes place in New York City where Mrs. 'Merkle' starts working as a saleswoman in a departmant store that is owned by the family Finley. Jake Finley and his father work together: Jake is responsible for the toy department. He conveniently comes across Holly, a beautiful assistant to fashion designer Gloria who dreams of becoming one herself. She's also the legal guardian of her nephew Gabe. He is her first priority and she feels she has no time for anything else. But even though Jake respects her choice, he will not let this wonderful person go without trying.

Why watch it? This movie is not as great as Mrs. Miracle, I have to admit. But Jewel Staite is wonderful, so is Eric Johnson. It feels like the story is a bit rushed at times, but it's got everything that you can find in Mrs. Miracle. It's about love, giving, family and well...toys. Classic toys like trains and board games, instead of all the technical stuff you see everywhere nowadays. My only 'downpoint' about the movie is Holly's boss Gloria. She is overly dramatic (just as her character should be) but it really gets on my nerves and makes it less enjoyable to watch the movie. What this movie adds is attention to children who's parents are in the military and have to spend Christmas with out them. Instead of focusing mostly on family matters and love, this movie also focuses on work related issues. It's a nice addition to the Mrs. Miracle series, and definitely worth a watch.

A Christmas Kiss (2011) with Elisabeth Röhm
Wendy is an aspiring designer, but for now she's assistant to slave worker Priscilla (Elisabeth Röhm). All she wants is to impress her and make her dreams come true. Then she meets Adam in an elevator and when the elevator falls down, they kiss. Later it turns out Adam is Priscilla's boyfriend/fiancee. Adam and Wendy grow closer as the holidays approach, because she has to make sure the engagement goes forward as planned.

Why watch it? It's funny and cute. It's nice to see Röhm in an 'evil' role, not to mention eye candy Brendan Fehr. Though it's kinda weird to see Fehr so businessy, and good to see him warm up as the movie progresses. Storywise it's amazing that it's set against the Nutcracker, which - of course - is the theater piece for Christmas, as well as the Christmas Carol for a party. Other than that it's one of those inspiring stories for young starters who are trying to make a career and need to stand up to a fierce boss. And the dynamic between the roommates is amazingly funny. Who doesn't love that? Watch it yourself (in parts).

Christmas is Ruined (short 8 minutes) with Tom Lenk
It's a funny take on a missing Santa Claus where an elf is being interrogated because the workshop has been burned down. It takes place in the interogation room of a police department where tension is running high.
Note: It's a Funny or Die video, w
atch it yourself:  http://www.funnyordie.com/videos/08bb57123f/christmas-is-ruined

Why watch it? It's ridiculously funny! Tom is an amazing elf and his responses to the interogation is very creative. The ending is both scary as brilliant. It's just an awesome take on a Christmas story.

P.S. I Love You with James Marsters
A young widow discovers that her late husband has left her ten messages to help her ease the pain and start a new life. Every now and then she gets a letter telling her to do something or remeniscing. It also takes her to Ireland, where her husband was from, leading her to visit her in-laws. But how it's possible for her to receive these letters, remains a mystery.

Why watch it? Technically this isn't a Christmas movie. But the song 'Fairytale in New York' is played during Gerry's funeral, which is a Christmas song. And Hilary Swank singing along with 'The Man That Got Away' by Judy Garland also reminds me of Christmas, because watching old classics/musicals feels like a Christmas holidays thing to do. Other than that P.S. I Love You is just a wonderful story, right to the tearjerking moments, with amazing actors. You should have at least seen it once in your life.

A Christmas Wish (2011) with Kristy Swanson
Martha Evans' husband left her, not long before Christmas. He took all of their cash, left her homeless and with two daughters and a stepson. She leaves the town, hoping to find work along the way. After a long while on the road, she ends up in a small town and finds a job at a rural diner (formarly known for its home-made root beer). But with bills piling up, a broken down car and the danger of being kicked out of the motel she's staying in, Christmas isn't looking to cheery.

Why watch it? First of all, I know that for a lot of fans Kristy Swanson isn't really Whedony. But she did play the first Buffy, so that's why she made the list. The movie is lovely and full of drama about someone who lost everything right before Christmas: The time to spend with your family. But they make the best of it, with a little help from their newly found friends. Even though the story might seem a bit rushed (people she's only just met going all out for her) it's the perfect Christmas spirit for those who need it. It also has a great guest appearance from Edward Herrman.
Still have to watch a couple of them though, like:

Anne Karenina (2012) with Olivia Williams
It's a story by Leo Tolstoy about the aristocrat Anna Karenina, who enters into a life-changing afair with the charming Count Vronsky. Set in the late 19th century Russia high society.

Why do I want to watch it? Because I have read the most amazing reviews. I love literature and Keira Knightley is amazing in these movies (just think Pride and Prejudice). Of course I will love the fact that Olivia Williams plays in it, but I am mostly looking forward to seeing how director Joe Wright made the sets and a real theatrical stage thing happen. I'm so curious, I cannot wait! I don't really know if it's a Christmas movie, but it's in Russia and the trailer has shown me a lot of snow, so I'm thinking it's good for the Holidays.

Ordinary People (1980) with Adam Baldwin
The accidental death of the older son of an affluent family deeply strains the relationship among the bitter mother, the good natured father, and the guilt-ridden younger son.

Why do I wanna watch it? Honestly, I would just like to see more of this young cute face of Adam Baldwin. When I watch the trailer it all seems very heavy and dramatic, not at all a Christmas movie. So I still have my doubts.

A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas (2011) with Neil Patrick Harris
Six years after their Guantanamo Bay adventure, stoner buds Harold and Kumar cause a holiday fracas by inadvertently burning down Harold's father-in-law's prize Christmas tree.

Why do I wanna watch it? I've never seen any Harold & Kumar movie, but the trailer seems hilarious! A little bit too much shouting for my taste, but funny none the less. Full of Christmas scenery and amazing actors. It's got Neil Patrick Harris AS Neil Patrick Harris and he sings 'We Wish You A Merry Christmas'. You gotta love that!

Holiday Wishes (2006) with Amber Benson
Britney, a rich and spoiled child, and Rachel, an orphan,  switch bodies after a visit to their High School party... With a little help from a stranger. Each girl wakes up as the other. While Rachel teaches Britney's unloving family the true meaning of Christmas (with some intervention of professional party planner Danni), Britney learns that giving is better than getting.

Why do I wanna watch it? Well, it sounds like Freaky Friday at Christmas, which makes it very predictable. But I love, love, love Amber Benson - who plays Danni - and I think she might the person to make this movie work.

Michelle Trachtenberg
Michelle is in a couple of movies that you can enjoy during the Holidays. I've seen two of them, but I decided to put them all together. Here they are:

- Christmas in My Hometown
- Richie Rich's Christmas Wish
- Black Christmas
- Ice Princess (Not really a Christmas movie, but still a little bit appropriate: )

I know I planned to do this list last year, but I simply didn't have the time. It's all done now though! That's all the ones I came up with/could find, so take your pick to make it a Whedony Christmas guys. Oh, and feel free to let me know what you think ;-).

The awesomeness of quotes pt 9

Last month I didn't have time for the monthly quotes page, but here it finally is!
Of course sitcoms are all about the jokes and the funny. So until now I haven't used them in my awesomeness of quotes series. But some sitcoms are just too funny not to deserve a place in this list. This blog centers on the sitcom How I Met Your Mother. Because the show is already in its eighth season, I won't be using quotes from every single episode. I'll just give you a list of a couple of good ones I like ;-).

Season 1

Of course I have to start with:
1x01 - Pilot
Future Ted: "Kids, I'm going to tell you an incredible story, the story of how I met your mother."
Ted's Son: "Are we being punished or something?"
Future Ted: "No."
Ted's Daughter: "Dad, is this gonna take a while?"
Future Ted: "Yes. Twenty-five years ago, before I was Dad, I had this whole other life…"

1x02 - Purple Giraffe
Lily: "Hey. I'm just sitting here. Wearing my ring. My beautiful ring. Kinda makes wearing other stuff seem wrong. Like... my shirt. Kinda don't wanna wear my shirt anymore. Or my underwear. Oh, that's right, I'm not wearing any."
Marshall [stops working and looks at Lily]: " No underwear?"
Lily: "Not even slightly."
(Camera pans to show Ted is in the room)
Ted: "Guys... BOUNDARIES!"

1x12 - The Wedding
Marshall and Lily argue about their plans for an ideal wedding
Marshall: "Ok, I'm just saying that it's my wedding too and I should have a say in it."
Lily: "But I'm the bride. So, I win."
Marshall: "But I thought marriage is about two equal partners, sharing a life together."
Lily: "Right, but I'm the bride. So, I win."
1x18 - Nothing Good Happens After 2 AM.
Sandy Rivers: "We should have sex."
Robin: "What?"
Rivers: "Why not? We’re both available, we’re both attractive, we’re both good at it. At least I’m good at it, and even if you’re not, don’t worry. I’ll have a good time either way."
Robin: "Well, moving past the horrifying image of your hair helmet clanging against the headboard, I don’t get involved with people I work with."
Rivers: "Get involved? Who said get involved? I'm just saying we should have sex. Having sex is fun! (he gives her his card and their news show starts) Phone number, call me anytime. (starts reads teleprompter) A lot of teams in action tonight..."
1x22 - Come On
Ted and Barney are in a library trying to recruit Barney's friend Penelope for a rain dance
Penelope: "Why the hell should I help you?"
Barney: "Come on, I know it didn't work out between us, but we did have a relationship."
Penelope: "We had sex in your car twice and then you dumped me. How is that a relationship?"
Barney: "Twice!"
Penelope (loudly): "Barney, there is no way I'm-" (student shushes her)
Barney: "Seriously, come on."
Ted: "Penelope, I really need to make it rain this weekend."
Penelope: "Why?"
Ted: "There's this girl-"
Penelope: "Oh, there's this girl! You know the traditional rain dance is a sacred prayer to nature. I don't think the great spirit looks too kindly on white dudes who co-opt it to get laid."
Ted: "But this is the girl I love! If it doesn't rain this weekend, she's gonna end up with the wrong guy!"
Penelope: "This wrong guy. Is he a huge jackass?"
Ted: "Absolutely."
Penelope: "Kinda like Barney?"
Ted: "Kinda."
Barney: "Hey!"
Penelope: "You hit on my mom!"
Barney: "We weren't exclusive!"
Penelope (to Ted): "I'm in."

Season 2
2x02 - The Scorpion and the Toad
Ted: "Five bucks says she still wants Marshall."
Robin: "You're on."
Ted: "Five American bucks."
Robin: "Damn it!"

2x05 - World's Greatest Couple
Lily: "Why would I want to change anything? This place is great, except you don't have a TV."
Barney: "See that wall? (turns on TV) 300 inch flatscreen! They only sell them in Japan but I know a guy. They ship it over in a tugboat like freakin' King Kong!"
Lily: "It hurts my eyes..."
Barney: "Yeah, that doesn't go away."

2x15 - Lucky Penny
Barney (talking with Lily about waiting in line for the wedding-dress sale): "I can’t go, I’ve got this thing…"
Lily: "What thing?"
Barney: "...a penis."

2x20 - Showdown
Robin (Lily walks out, wearing her wedding dress): "Wow, Lily, you look so beautiful!"
Lily: "I know, I'm beautiful! I'm a fairy princess! (She lifts her arms up and the dress falls down) I'm too skinny for my dress!!"

2x21 - Something Borrowed
Ted: "Dude, you shaved your fricking head!"
Marshall: "Yeah! Yeah, but it's good. I'll just shave it all off. What a great solution! Just be bald, 'cos it's cool, right? Bruce Willis, Michael Jordan, Britney Spea- (looks in mirror) Oh, God, what did I do!? How could you let me shave my head!?"
Ted: "What!?"
Marshall: "You're the worst best man ever! I hate you!"

Marshall (after Lily sees his hair, she walks toward the gardner and asks him his hat and puts in on Marshalls hair, covering the bald area): "Hat! We thought of authentic Native American headdress before we thought of hat!"

2x22 - Something Blue
Lily: "We should come up with a whole new last name."
Marshall: "Oh, that's easy; Lily and Marshall Skywalker."
Lily: "Lily and Marshall Hasselhoff."
Marshall: "Oh, got it. Lily and Marshall Awesome. Hey have you met the Awesomes? Lily, Marshall, their son Totally, and their daughter Freaking?"

Season 3
3x04 - Little Boys
Robin: "What's my 'but'? You know, I'm really nice, but..."
Ted (voiceover): "But she's afraid of commitment."
Lily (voiceover): "But she's a gun nut."
Barney (voiceover): "But she's... Canadian."
Marshall (voiceover): B"ut she doesn't like Field of Dreams."
All: "I can't think of anything.

3x07 - Dowisetrepla
Marshall: "Ted, how many times have I told you to put the lid back on the peanut butter jar?! It's this inconsiderate, immature jackassery that makes me feel like I'm living in The Real World House! And not the early days when they all had jobs and social consciences, I'm talking about Hawaii, and after! I can't take it anymore! Ted, Lily and I are married now! It's time! We're getting our own place!"
Lily: "... Actually, I left the lid off, sorry, baby."

3x14 - The Bracket
Barney: "There are four kinds of women who go to the hardware store by themselves."
Robin: "Of course there are."
Barney: "Single, recently single, recently divorced, lesbian who will let me watch."
Lily: "You can not be more evil."
Barney: "Sorry five. Recently widowed."

3x19 - Everything Must Go
Abby: "Are you thinking what I'm thinking?"
Barney: "Yes.
Abby: "You're thinking about having sex with Ted?"

Season 4
4x07 - Not A Father's Day
Barney: "Marshall, great news - I'm not a father."
Marshall: "Congratulations, buddy."
Barney: "I know, this is the happiest moment of my life! Marshall, the way I feel about not having kids... I never knew I could love something this much. That's why, I'm creating a holiday. From now on, today will be known as 'Not A Father's Day'!"
Marshall: "Wow, you're creating a holiday."
Barney: "Why not? Everyone else gets a day - mothers, fathers, Bastille's...why can't there be a day for those who are single and like it that way?"
Marshall: "Now you just sound like a fat girl at Valentine's Day."

4x14 - The Possimpible
(The gang checks out Robin's fan mail from Metro News 1)
Lily: "Wow. You had more fans than I thought."
Ted: "And only about 60% of them are prison inmates."
Robin: "What are these guys thinking? I am WAY past my "dating prisoners" phase. I mean, hello, I'm not 19 anymore."

4x16 - Sorry, Bro
Ted: "I never said I was gonna get back together with her. But I was thinking, she's new in town, would it be the worst thing in the world if I gave her a call?"
Marshall: "No, no, Ted, it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world. It would be the fourth worst thing. Number one, super volcano. Number two, an asteroid hits the earth. Number three, all footage of Evil Knievel is lost. Number four, Ted calls Karen. Number five, Lily gets eaten by a shark."

Lily: "I'm Lily and I approve the order of that list."

4x18 - Old King Clancy
Marshall: "If I could nail a celebrity it would be Lily. She's the star of my heart."
Lily: "Aww. For me it would be Hugh Jackman."

Season 5
5x06 - Bagpipes
Future Ted: "In the fall of 2009, a new couple moved in upstairs. We haven't met them yet, but we could hear them - all the time. Well they were always - well, let's just say, playing the bagpipes." (Current Ted is caught by surprise and Robin appears)
Robin: "Okay, this is ridiculous, I can't believe those two are still bagpiping."
Ted: "I know, it's been six hours. Must be that tantric bagpiping that Sting's into."
Robin: "She's keeping on saying to play the bagpipes harder, but it sounds like he's bagpiping her pretty hard. There's a glass of water in my bedroom that's vibrating like Jurassic Park."
Ted (to neighbors): "You have neighbors. Shut the bagpipes up!"

5x07 - The Rough Patch
Lily: "So, what did you guys do last last night?"
Robin: "Well, I wanted to go a party and he wanted to go dancing, but we couldn't both do something only one of us wanted to do, so we just stayed home and fell asleep watching a movie."
Barney: "It was legen—wait for it—ds of the Fall! Legends of the Fall! (shrugs) It was OK."

5x15 - Rabbit or Duck
Marshall: "You want us to arrange your marriage?"
Ted: "Absolutely! Look, there are two sides to dating - picking and getting picked. Getting picked I'm good at. Ladies love Teddy Westside."
Marshall: "You're waiting for me to comment on your 'self-assigned nickname.' (Pause) Well here's my comment: I LOVE IT!"
Ted: "Really?"
Marshall: "Teddy Westside? Continue!"
Ted: "It’s the picking I suck at, I pick the wrong girls! But you guys are the best pickers I know. You picked each other!"

Season 6

6x01 - Big Days
Lily is caught by surprise that Marshall's parents will be staying with them during their baby's first three months
Lily: "You know what, Marshall, why don't you have a baby with your Dad?"

Marshall: "Oh okay, Lily. Why don't you have a baby with your butt?"

Barney: "Wait, where are you g- that's a compliment! You're the least needy woman I've ever met. That's awesome! No guy's gonna say "Who's your daddy?" to Robin Scherbatsky; you're your own daddy. Barney: "Oh no."
Marshall: "Oh No shut down too."
Ted: "There's Where."
Jerry: "Where's Where?"
Lily: "Where's where Was was, isn't it?"

Ted: "You make it sound like I dated a series of Stieg Larsson novels."

Ted (reads shirt message): "Bangtoberfest. This time it's really not personal."

The awesomeness of quotes pt 8

It's been a while since I did an 'awesomeness of quotes', but  I'm beginning the new year with a doll of a show :P. A couple of years ago Joss Whedon came back to television with the show Dollhouse. A show which he produced with Eliza Dushku (who played Faith in both Buffy and Angel) and she would star in it as well. The show revolves around a corporation where wealthy people can hire 'Actives' and do whatever they want with them: Live out fantasies. Actors could play a different character every week so to speak, because they wouldn't be acting but they would be imprinted with different personalities. It was a good show, that unfortunately had to do with a lot of trouble from the network. So stories were altered and when it became clear that the second season would be the last one, it unraveled like a roller coaster. Dollhouse was full of amazing characters who were played by even more amazing actors. It was definitely criticizing the way things were going in the U.S. as well as elsewhere with big compagnies and how many things are probably wrong with the world. And that makes for some great quotes. So without any further ado, the awesomeness of quotes from Dollhouse!

Season 1

1x01 -Ghost
Paul: "Dollhouse."

Victor: [as Lubov] "What?"
Paul: "Dollhouse. Say it."
Victor: [as Lubov] "Dollhouse."
Paul: "Say it again."
Victor: [as Lubov] "Your brains are... [Ballard cocks gun] Okay! Dollhouse! Doll freakin' house. I keep saying it. It's fun to say. Dollhouse. Dollhouse. Dollhouse. Dollhouse."

1x02 - The Target
Mellie: [After seeing Echo's picture] "Pretty. Who's she?"
Paul: "Nobody, according to the FBI database. No record of her."
Mellie: "Is she in trouble?"
Paul: "Maybe. She just got caught up with the wrong people. Either way, I'll keep looking until I find her."
Mellie: [As Ballard's walking away] "Lucky girl."

Topher: [to Boyd] Anything for you, because I love you. Deep, deep man love.

1x03 - Stage Fright
Topher: "Sierra should come into play in a minute."
Boyd: "I'm glad they double tracked this. Who's handling her?"
Topher: "Joe Hearn. You won't like him."
Voice: "Fifteen minutes to curtain."
Boyd: "Echo's on in fifteen. Okay. Okay."
Topher: "Oh my God. Are you nervous? Opening night jitters? Your little girl out there on the big stage?"
Boyd: "On a stage where the last little girl caught on fire?"
Topher: "Fair point."
Boyd: "I mean, her singing's not a problem. It's not, right? I mean, she is a good singer. I think she's good. She wouldn't freeze up."
Topher: [Laughing] "She'll be fine, Mama Rose."

Dr. Claire Saunders: "You sent Echo on a high-risk engagement?"
Topher: "Doctor Saunders! How nice of you to annoy me."

1x04 - Gray Hour
Boyd: "They're eating lunch."
Topher: "They're eating lunch together, man friend. The same three. Even the same table. They're grouping."
Boyd: "Are you saying they remember each other?"
Topher: "No, no, no. The wipes are clean. This goes deeper than memory, into instinctual survival patterns. Flocking. A whole mess of sparrows turning on a dime, salmon trucking upstream. This isn't a book club, man friend, this is the herd."
Boyd: "They're not bison, Topher."
Topher: "They're a little bit bison."
Boyd: "They didn't used to be."
Topher: "They volunteered for this."
Boyd: "So we're told."

Ivy: [Reading from a list] "Pizza squares, ice cream bites, beef jerky? Okay, you may be the boy god of all things neuro, and I do worship at the altar of your genius, but I am not getting you all of this stuff."
Topher: "Ivy, babe, add juice boxes."
Ivy: "You're privilege abusing."
Topher: "Do you want to know how to avoid spandrels when aligning rigid designators?"
Ivy: "Grape or apple?"

Topher: "That could lead to a coma state, or it could turn her into Carrie at the prom."

1x05 - True Believer
Dr. Saunders: "One good sneeze could bring on a seizure."
Topher: "Or even worse, a sneezure."

Topher: "Doctor?"
Dr. Saunders: "Topher?"
Topher: "Hello."
Dr. Saunders: "Hello."
Topher: "So listen. Here’s the thing. I was looking -- glancing -- I noticed… Victor."
Dr. Saunders: "You noticed Victor."
Topher: "Mm-hmm. In the shower, and he’s… naked."
Dr. Saunders: "Victor’s naked in the shower."
Topher: "Right. Anyway, he seemed to be having a kind of… man-reaction."
Dr. Saunders: "A what?"
Topher: "A, you know, reaction that a man -- person might have in the… you know, the… naked part. Shower. Victor."
Dr. Saunders: "Victor had an erection?"
Topher: "I prefer man-reaction."

1x06 - Man on the Street
Victor: "I did something bad."
Echo: "What did you do?"
Victor: "Nobody will tell me."

DeWitt: "Why didn't you tell us you were setting up Hearn?"
Boyd: "He had to be clear. He had to be flush with success or he'd never have tried again."
DeWitt: "You will never take action like that on your own again inside these walls. Am I clear?"
Boyd: "You're clear."
DeWitt: "A bonus has been wired to your account."
Boyd: "I don't need a bonus."
DeWitt: "Well I need to give it to you."

1x07 - Echoes
DeWitt: "Are you making any progress?"
Topher: "I'm working! What are you doing, besides ... being ..."
DeWitt: "Being what?"
Topher: "Wait a minute."
DeWitt: 'Sarcastic? Unfeeling? British?"
Topher: "It's an animal."
DeWitt: "Where?"
Topher: "No! The word!"
DeWitt: "Still you have to admit I am very British. I don't say hard ... 'Rs'"
Topher: "You know what I like? Brown Sauce? What's it made of? Science doesn't know!"
DeWitt: "It's made of brown."
Topher: "Brown...mined from the earth by the hard scrabble brown miners of north Brownderton!"
DeWitt: "Oh my god, I find lentils completely incomprehensible."

Topher: "Our problems are huge and indomitable."
DeWitt: "Ooh, I could eat that word. Or a crisp. Do you have any crisps?"
Topher: "You haven't seen my drawer of inappropriate starches?"

Dominic: [drunkenly, with gun pointed at Victor] "Hey, I'm fine!"
Victor: "All right. Easy, buddy."
Dominic: "I know how to solve problems."
Victor: "You bet."
Dominic: [his hold on the gun goes limp] "Oh, man, this is so heavy. It makes my arms tired."

1x08 - Needs
Victor: [as Anthony] "Who are you?"
Echo: [as Caroline] "Hey! I woke up in a five-star floor coffin just like you, buddy."

1x09 - Spy in the House of Love
Topher: "I found this in the chair."
Boyd: "And?"
Topher: "This chip let someone access the primary imprint protocol, which means they could have altered my imprints. I make a cheerleader. They make a cheerleader that shoots people! Or an assassin that does cheers! Or any active, any time, with a parameter we don't know about."
Boyd: "We have a spy."
Topher: "Inside the dollhouse."
Boyd: "You think it's me? You think I'm the spy?"
Topher: "Not in a bad way."
Boyd: "They find out that you talked to me before you called DeWitt, they'll fry you."
Topher: "Yeah. I didn't really think that through."

1x10 - Haunted
Echo: [as Margaret] "I swear I've never felt this good. Did being young feel this good?"
DeWitt: "I seem to recall it was rather nice. Wonder why we gave it up?"
Echo: [as Margaret] "Please! You're what, ten years younger than me?"
DeWitt: "And oddly fifteen years older."

1x11 - Briar Rose
Stephen Kepler: "Would you look at this place? I mean, first of all feng shui up the yin yang, also I designed parts of it but I did not design the stone cold foxes in the small clothes and the ample massage facilities. I mean, don't get me wrong, I heart my porn, but this is cool!"
Paul: "This is a bad place."
Stephen Kepler: "Bad people, maybe. Good place."

1x12 - Omega
Echo: "You think we're gods?
Alpha: "We're not just humans anymore. We're not multiple personalities. We're many personalities. Uh... one of my personalities happens to be a multiple personality, but that doesn't make me a multiple personality. I'm looking for a little nuance here."
Echo: "We're not gods."
Alpha: "Fine, Übermensch. Nietzsche predicted our rise. Perfected. Objective. Something new."
Echo: "Right. New, superior people. With a little German thrown in. What could possibly go wrong?"

1x13 - Epitaph One
Topher: "If I think I can figure things out, is that curiosity or arrogance?"

Season 2

2x01 - Vows
Whiskey: "What if she went over your head?"
Boyd: "I'm very tall."

2x02 - Instinct
Topher: "Perhaps triggering lactation was a bridge too far. Live and learn."

2x03 - Belle Chose
DeWitt: "Good news on the coma front?"
Topher: "Uuuhhhhhhh... yeah. Good news is that he's in a coma."
DeWitt: "I beg your pardon?"
Boyd: "Just show her what you showed me."
Topher: [Shows Adelle a brain scan] "This is a brain. A healthy brain. Frankly an... overly smart brain... it's my brain. And this is Terry Karrens' brain. [Shows Adelle another brain scan] See these dark areas? How they extend all the way out to here? You know why that looks like that? That's because Terry Karrens doesn't use that part of his brain. And that'd be where you find stored such things as empathy, compassion... an aversion to disemboweling puppies. Basically, this is what some of your more famous serial killers' brains look like."
DeWitt: "You're quite certain of this?"
Topher: "Certain enough that I have serious ethical problems trying to wake him up."
Boyd: "Topher has ethical problems. Topher."
Topher: "Heh. Way to land it."

2x04 - Belonging
Topher: "Do you know where you are?"
Priya: "I'm in hell."
Topher: "You're in Los Angeles. I can understand the mixup."

2x05 - The Public Eye
Echo [as Bree]: "I think her bad guys are badder than my bad guys!"

2x06 - The Left Hand
Bennett: "No, no, you're very pale. White. Pinkish-white. I mean, your skin. Your skin is like a pig."

Topher: "Okay, so we have had an active, Whiskey. She was rendered unengageable. So we - *I* made her into a doctor. Uh - and you - so I thought maybe - similar - Bennett - the real Bennett would use an active to..."
Bennett: "You thought... That's idiotic. Actives are beautiful."
Topher: "Yeah."

2x07 - Meet Jane Doe
Topher: "Well I punched her in the kisser - not what I was intending to do there, by the way - and knocked her out cold, which she might have been impressed by if she hadn't been out cold."

2x08 - A Love Supreme
Boyd: "Alpha do not do this. There's a part of you that knows this is wrong."
Alpha: "There are many parts of me that know this is wrong. None of them care. And six... they just find it funny."

Alpha: "You're in for a ride. You're not going to get loose. One of my imprints was an Eagle Scout, another one was a sailor. There's a dirty joke in there somewhere."

2x09 - Stop-Loss
Topher: "What did I just tell you?"
Victor: "5 years would seem like... 5 seconds."
Topher: "Welcome to the future, where cars fly, robots serve our every whim, and genetically engineered dinosaurs rule the Earth."
Ivy: "It's pretty much the same as when you left."

2x10 - The Attic
DeWitt: "You gave us extraordinary technology which will be used soon. The question is whether you have anything more to offer. Whether you can accept radical change, or buckle under pressure."
Topher: "I don't buckle. Occassionally, I swashbuckle."

2x11 - Getting Closer
Echo: "She could kill you with her brain."

DeWitt: "Caroline Farrel left quite a trail of unhappiness in her wake, and not a few bodies."
Echo: "Are you saying she's evil?"
DeWitt: "Worse. An idealist."

2x12 - The Hollow Men
Topher: "I did all of this. I'm the one who brings about the thought-pocalypse."
DeWitt: "Thought-pocalypse?"
Topher: "Is brain-pocalypse better? I figure, if I'm responsible for the end of the world, I get to name it."

Topher: "I'm the Tin Man, she's the Lion, and you're the head of the Lollipop Guild who's a traitor."

2x13 - Epitaph Two: Return
Alpha: "Because we're not freak shows. Well, okay, maybe I am, and Echo. Topher's a little off, but Adelle, she's a class act all the way."

One of my favorite characters is definitely Topher Brink. He is supersmart and has the most amazing lines. He's also a geek and in my own way (meaning not the genius way) I can totally relate :P. Just see for yourselves!
